Reliance Jio Infocomm(Jio) has resumed the sale of its 4G feature phone, starting the second round of feature phone versus smart phone battle in the telecom industry where all operators are targeting the 500 million customers who do not have access to smartphones.

Having completed the delivery of some six million 4G feature phones, the Mukesh Ambani run firm will now first cater to roughly 10 million additional customers who had shown interest in buying the phone but could not pick it up since the pre booking window was closed after the demand far exceeded the target of making available five million phones a week.

The first set of pre-booking started on August 24 and the window was closed on August 26.

"Of the many who are interested, about 6-7 million will ultimately buy the phone," a person aware of the matter said. According to sources, this Sunday onwards messages with a link attached have been sent those who had shown interest. On clicking the link, the customer will receive a code which he has to show at the nearest designated outlet to get his JioPhone.

Reliance JioPhone first impression: 7 things to know

By Sanchita Upadhyay Joshi Reliance JioPhone's deliveries are expected to start soon. The phone is reported to be available from this weekend or early next week to the roughly six million customers who have pre-booked the device. We got some time with the device this week, and here are our first impressions of Reliance JioPhone.

Appears bit bulky

The phone has been built by Reliance Jio's own Lfy brand. There's also Lfy branding at the back of the phone. With 2000 mAh battery on-board, JioPhone looks bit bulky in appearance. On the front, there's 2.4-inch display with VGA camera.

Has four buttons on below the display, followed by numeric keypad

Just below the screen, there are four buttons and one D-Pad in the centre. Among the four buttons, the top two are for 'menu' (left) and 'contacts' (right). The bottom two are for 'calling' (left) and 'disconnecting' (right). The D-Pad button in the centre is for activating voice assistant. The 'call' and 'call disconnecting' button are used to switch on or off the voice assistant. The buttons are followed by the numeric keypad. The D-Pad button can also be used for apps.

Has a plastic body

The phone comes with a plastic body. It has a matte finish which appears quite smooth. The buttons are made of rubber.

Rear camera performance is good considering the phone's price

JioPhone sports a 2MP camera at the back and a VGA in the front. Considering the pricing of the phone, the performance of the back camera looked quite fine. The pictures we took came out largely reasonable. The resolution of videos too appeared OK. The VGA camera at the front is average. However, we didn't face any difficulty during video chatting, could see the other person's face clearly.

Didnt't show any lag in performance

During the small time we had with the phone, it didn't show any lag. We browsed internet and opened some apps, all worked quite fine with no jitters. JioPhone is powered by a dual-core processor with 512MB RAM. The phone's internal storage is 4GB, expandable up to 128GB with microSD card. Both Qualcomm and China-based Spreadtrum are said to be making processors for the phone.

There are no Facebook or WhatsApp apps for now

JioPhone runs on Firefox OS-based KaiOS. It is quite different from Google's Android OS and Apple's iOS. The phone has its own app store. For now, there's no Lite version of both Facebook as well as WhatsApp in the Jio app store. It has Jio-specific apps like Jio video-calling app, JioMusic, JioTV, JioCinema and more.

The phone is single-SIM and there is no hotspot feature

Reliance JioPhpne is a single-SIM phone and there is no hotspot feature on it. For connectivity, the phone has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth options.

Jio did not immediately respond to ET's emailed queries.

The JioPhone is up against incumbents who have struck pacts with handset makers in providing 4G smartphones in the same price range. Bharti Airtel's pact is with home-bred phone maker-Karbonn and the 4G smartphones from the Airtel's stables will be available at an effective price of under Rs 2,000, subject to minimum monthly recharges. Vodafone has tied up Micromax to bring its 4G smartphone at Rs 999 for its customers thereby taking on competition.

The mass-market feature phone that is being offered for free effectively — the company takes a three year interest-free refundable deposit of Rs 1,500 — is key to Jio's bid to quickly scale up its around 13?6 million plus user base by targeting the 500-million feature phone customers.

The telco had also rolled out refund policies wherein the customer who returns his JioPhone in first year gets back no refund; if he returns between 12-24 months, he gets Rs 500 back and on returning between 24-36 months, gets a refund of Rs 1000.
